The Story Behind Essiac & the 8-Herb Formula – a word from our founder

A Quick Overview Before You Dive In

Essiac has a long, emotional, and sometimes confusing history — especially when it comes to the debate between the 4-herb and 8-herb versions. This page is here to give you a clear, honest, and balanced look at that history, including:

-Where Essiac originally came from

-How the formula appears to have shifted from 8 herbs, to 4 herbs, and back to 8

-My own experience using Essiac during my cancer journey

-Why I’ve chosen to make the 8-herb version available in the UK

-How you can listen to your own body and choose what feels right for you

If you’d like the simple version:

I choose the 8-herb blend because of its history, its depth, and the results I’ve personally experienced — but I support you in choosing whatever feels aligned for your body.

The rest of this page is simply an overview of the full story, shared transparently so you can make an informed choice.

Essiac is one of those remedies with a history that wanders through decades of stories, memories, half-kept notes, and passionate opinions. There are suppliers who insist their version is the correct one. There are writers who are absolutely certain the other version is wrong. And there are decades of heartfelt testimonials supporting both.

It’s been used for over a century, yet the deeper you go into the origins, the foggier everything can feel.

I’m just one person, doing my best to read, research, question, and stay open.

I am not tied or “married” to any one company or supplier.

I’m not here to force a side.

I’m here to stay honest and be upfront about the debates within the Essiac world so they don’t need to stand in your way of benefiting from these miraculous herbs.

When I first started selling this tea, I genuinely had no idea how deep — and how emotional — the debates went between the different formulas. I wasn’t looking to pick a side. I simply wanted to offer something supportive, something honest, and to save people from the absolute maze I went through trying to find good-quality Essiac in the UK at a price I could afford. I was already navigating my cancer diagnosis, stretched to the max, cutting down on work to try to rest while attending doctors’ appointments, facing the fear of my loved ones, and taking in a million suggestions about supplements people insisted were ‘the one’… you get the picture, and if you’ve found this page you can probably relate to some, if not all, of this.

Back then, I didn’t know there were “camps” or “factions.”

I didn’t know there were entire Facebook threads dedicated to arguing about whether the 4-herb or the 8-herb formula is “the one and only true Essiac.”

I just wanted to help people access what helped me so much on my journey. A little voice in me kept shouting – “this stuff has to be shared and available to those who need it most!”

And that intention hasn’t changed.

But instead, I felt like I’d stumbled into a herbal turf war!

This page exists because I want you to understand the complex history so you can make an informed decision for your own health journey — not a polished marketing myth that values sales over truth, not a biased version, and definitely not anything I can’t stand behind.

Where Essiac Began

Where the 8-Herb Formula Comes Back In

In 1959, Rene Caisse began treating terminally ill patients at the Brusch Medical Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, some reports suggest she was supervising no fewer than 18 doctors. Dr Charles Brusch not only operated his own medical research centre, he was also the personal physician of President John F. Kennedy. Dr Brusch was a leading activist and proponent of natural medicine at a time when mainstream medicine didn’t know how to cope with people “thinking outside the box.”

After three months of treating these patients, it was determined that, on average, the size of their tumours shrank due to a change in cellular formations, and the patients began to regain weight noticeably. None of these doctors proclaimed Essiac to be a cure, but once the research had concluded they did state Essiac was of definite benefit.

Their collaboration is where an 8-herb formula appears again in the historical record. Reports describe them developing the 8-herb version together, with the four additional herbs believed to add to the efficiency of the blend.

Dr Brusch wrote a notarised letter in 1990 attesting to the efficacy of the Essiac formula and stating that it had cured his own cancer some years after the research had concluded.

Now, there are many variations of the story following their time together in the research centre:

• Some claim Brusch expanded the formula based on her work

• Some claim Rene approved it

• Some claim she moved away from it and back to the 4 herbs after this time

There doesn't seem to be a single definitive statement from Caisse saying, “This is the story.”

Later reports on the 4 vs 8 debate come from Brusch, his attorney, or Rene’s friends from Canada. And to say the picture is muddy is an understatement.

To put it plainly:

The history is confusing, badly documented in places, and deeply emotional for a lot of people.

And I refuse to pretend otherwise.

My Own Journey With All of This

Why I Share the Debate

Instead of Just Saying “8 Is Best — Buy THIS Tea”

I believe you deserve honesty.

Not a trumped-up myth.

Not a conveniently tidy version of history.

I don’t want you to go through what I went through — where I had to dig deep after reading Facebook debates about different versions online and start doubting: was this the right choice? There’s enough polarisation online and in our lives without me adding to it.

And because there is so much emotion, so much argument, and so much “this is the only true Essiac” energy floating around, I want to bring the conversation into the light so you can make your own informed choices.

This page will continue to evolve as I learn more.

I’ll add updates as new research or information becomes available.

You’re not being given a fixed dogma — you’re being invited into transparency, to make your own choices.

Step Away From the Debate… and Listen to Your Body

Here’s something I feel strongly about:

If we strip away the noise — the arguments, the Facebook groups, the people debating each other online — and just look at the herbs…

Both formulas contain extraordinary plants with a massive ability to support.

And if at this time you decide you’d rather go with a 4-herb blend, that’s okay too. I fully support you in your decision, as I do believe any Essiac is better than no Essiac, or being so confused by all the options that you don’t take anything at all.

All I’d say is that if you are looking elsewhere, please look for organic herbs that include appropriate quantities and also use the full plants, including root where necessary (a mistake I made early on before finding this version).

And if you stand back from the “which is the right Essiac” debate long enough, you might notice something important:

Your body already knows what feels right for you.

So instead of:

• Overthinking

• Getting overwhelmed every time you read conflicting advice online

• Being pulled into other people’s certainty about the one single thing that did/did not work for them…

Take a breath.

And just ask yourself — ask your body:

“Is this going to support me right now?”

If the answer is yes — trust that.

That’s what real healing is about: listening to your own innate wisdom and getting back in tune with your body that’s crying out to be listened to.

Not choosing a side in someone else’s historical argument, but choosing what feels aligned for you.

This is the path I chose, and it’s led me on the most wonderful journey of healing inside and out.

My Promise to You
